Dead Harpy

Pen and ink

Harpies – like mermaids, sirens, and sphinxes – creatures that combine the bodies of human women with those of animals, occur frequently in ancient myth and subsequent folklore as symbols of predatory female desire, and they appear as such frequently in Peter’s work. In this case, however, the harpy is shown to be a victim and an object of pity.
