Peter produced several variations on this theme, making use of the same limited set of stamps. He created variety by simply turning stamps upside down and depth by adjusting the strength or faintness of the ink. The process shows him playfully exploring the possibilities of the expressive language his stamps offered him. By illustrating an earthquake – in which everything falls apart – he can be seen as providing a witty commentary on the process by which such a composition is put together.
