Nero

Photocopy

Nero, the famously tyrannical and corrupt emperor of Rome, was not content with absolute political power, but wanted to be admired as a musician, singer and actor as well, a goal he never achieved. Peter’s image shows him contemplating a comic mask, symbol of the theater, which, with its smile, seems to mock him. The lesson, perhaps, is that excellence in art is more valuable than power.
