Old Man Struggling with Death

In 2006, Peter was diagnosed with the cancer that would take his life two years later. This drawing represents his response to the condition of being terminally ill. The figure at the left, recognizably a caricature of himself, is locked in hand-to-hand combat with death. Though small in scale, the image is monumental in conception: the contrast between black and white is skillfully mobilized to express the elemental existential struggle between death and the will to live.
