Half-human, half-goat, Pan was the god of primeval nature and primitive sensuality. This sketch, more vigorously and elaborately worked than the preceding one, is an example of how vividly Peter imagined the figures of ancient myth: his Pan is both earthy and cunning, and one has the feeling that it may be based on an encounter with a living person.
