According to the ancient myth, the Greek sculptor Pygmalion made a statue of a beautiful woman and fell desperately in love with it. When he prayed to Aphrodite, the goddess of love, to bring his creation to life, his wish was granted. Beyond suggesting the way in which the artist gives shape to his own deepest desires, Peter’s image possesses a wonderful sexual charge, representing the moment at which the statue comes to life as one in which two people simultaneously recognize their intense attraction to one another.
